North Yorkshire is home to an abundance of outdoor education providers, offering the chance to try fun and exciting activities during a holiday by the coast. Here we list just some of our favourite watersports activities in Whitby. Surfing, sailing and white water rafting are all on offer just a short drive from Whitby Holiday Park.
Scaling Dam Sailing Club
If you’re looking to channel your inner Sinbad, we recommend visiting the Scaling Dam Sailing Club. This club offers a wide range of certified sailing, windsurfing, powerboating, paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing classes taught by qualified instructors.
The academy is located in Easington and has an excellent clubhouse with a large garden area where you can dry off in the sun. If you’d like to gain a qualification, or simply try your hand at sailing, book a class online on Scaling Dam Sailing Club’s website.
Whitby Surf School
Whitby Surf School is an award-winning watersports provider and well worth a visit during your holiday in Whitby. Here you can attend surf lessons in either a public or private session for beginners and intermediate abilities. Both classes will teach you the basics of surfing, however, we recommend booking a private lesson for one-on-one guidance from the experts. All sessions are run by local instructors, so you can guarantee that they know these waters like the back of their hands – giving you the best possible surfing experience.
This surf school is only a nine-minute drive from our coastal holiday park. Surf lessons are a great way to spend a sunny afternoon with the family.
North Yorkshire Water Park
North Yorkshire Water Park is an excellent place to visit for daredevils who love being in the water. The park offers a wide range of activities, including kayaking, canoeing, wakeboarding, mini electric boats, pedalos, sailing, open water swimming, ziplining and climbing.
North Yorkshire Water Park is perhaps best known for its ‘Total Wipeout’ style Aqua Parks. These inflatable Aqua Parks consist of three separate obstacle courses – two for adults and older children (Wipeout and Warrior) and one park, which has been designed for children between the ages of three and seven (Splash Kingdom).
Children can run, jump and splash to their hearts content at this watersports attraction. At the end of your session, be sure to pop in the excellent on-site café. Here you can sit on the viewing platform which overlooks the lake and enjoy a hot drink or a tasty, cooked breakfast.

Teesside White Water Centre
The Teeside White Water Centre is slightly further afield, but well worth the hour journey in our opinion. Whilst there are a variety of watersports sessions on offer, the White Water Rafting Course is certainly the highlight of this adrenaline fuelled attraction.
The friendly team will supply you with wetsuits and all the equipment you’ll need - you simply need a bring a sense of adventure! The artificial course, will put your paddling skills to the test, with tight turns and rapids. You’ll experience the largest artificial drop in the UK as you navigate the course!
Channel your inner Viking and row for your team as you race against your friends in a Bell Boating experience tournament. The Teeside White Water Centre also provides a family rafting and powerboating experience and canoe hire for those who want to paddle about at their own pace.
