The beautiful beach of Saltwick Bay is a treasure trove for ancient fossils waiting to be discovered. Whether you are a seasoned Fossil Hunter or are looking to begin your first Fossil Hunting trip, people of all ages regularly venture down to the Bay to chisel, crack and carve out what they find.

Some Fossils You Might Find…

AmmonitePerhaps one of the most recognisable fossils, Ammonites were shelled cephalopods that died out about 140 million years ago.
BelemniteNoted to be ‘abundant’ in Saltwick Bay, Belemnites are the fossilised remains of a squid like creature from up to 135 million years ago! You can recognise them by the bullet-like shape.
Whitby JetThis beautiful black material is made of fossilised Monkey Trees and is used in jewellery that you will find for sale in Whitby

Safe Practice

  • Keep clear of the cliffs It is recommended to keep a distance of 8+ metres from the base of cliffs and to wear a hard hat if near to them to avoid injury from any falling rocks
  • Muddy Sand – Even though it may look dry and cracked, mud that is set on the beach can quickly become wet and sticky. Be careful to stay on secure ground.
  • Check Tide Times – Particularly at Saltwick Bay, you can find yourself engrossed in Fossil Hunting to find you are in a section of the beach that gets cut off when the tide comes in. Make sure you know when high tide and low tide is. You can use this website: www.tideschart.com
  • Bring Appropriate Tools – A hammer and a chisel will get you very far when Fossil Hunting, be sure to remember safety goggles when chiselling in case any fragments fly off when doing so
